If you’re a mom, you know how it feels to deal with the ups and downs of pregnancy. From not being able to sleep to morning sickness, many moms will tell you that nausea is one of the worst parts of pregnancy. In this blog post, I’ll share 13 morning sickness remedies to help relieve your nausea.

You may already be aware that being nauseated all of the time is tough, especially if you have other children to care for.

When I was pregnant with each of our four children, I had severe nausea 24/7 for all of the first trimester and part of the second.

Each pregnancy, I lost a lot of weight in the beginning because I couldn’t keep anything down. My doctor always seemed to be concerned, telling me to eat more (which wasn’t really the problem).

Eventually, the nausea passed and I was able to gain the recommended amount of weight. Thankfully, all of my babies were born healthy and full-term.

What Is Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is a common condition known as morning sickness. It typically begins at six weeks into pregnancy and continues for weeks or even months.

Symptoms usually improve during the second trimester, but, in a few women, the sickness continues throughout their pregnancy.

Despite its name, “morning” sickness may strike at any time of the day.

What Causes Morning Sickness

The exact reason is not totally understood. Symptoms may be triggered by a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced by the placenta.

Another potential cause of morning sickness is low blood sugar.

Persistent nausea can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • stress
  • being overtired
  • eating particular foods
  • motion sickness

These annoying nausea symptoms will typically go away once a pregnancy reaches its third trimester.

Women with severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, may require hospitalization and IV fluids.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a centuries-old herb that has been used for its various natural medicinal qualities, especially for treating nausea and upset stomach.

Try:

  • Ginger tea. You may also prepare your own by simmering sliced or grated fresh ginger in boiling water.
  • Ginger essential oil. You can dilute the oil with coconut oil and apply it behind your ears and/or on your wrists. Or use an essential oil diffuser.
  • Crystallized ginger. Though usually high in sugar, this seems to help a lot of people.
  • Ground ginger capsules. Look for options that aren’t mixed with any other substances.

2. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is one of the most popular morning sickness remedies on the market. Consumption of peppermint oil capsules, tablets, or tea may help relieve nausea.

The severity of the illness can be decreased by using peppermint oil before, during, and after meals.

I combine a few drops of peppermint essential oil with some coconut oil and put it behind my ears, around my neck, and on each of my wrists when I’m nauseated.

It can also help to diffuse the oil or simply smell it straight from the bottle.

Purchase peppermint oil online.

3. Acupuncture Treatments

In the past year, I’ve discovered the healing power of acupuncture. I’ve been amazed at how it has helped me manage my chronic illness symptoms.

Plus, it’s been shown to help expectant moms manage nausea symptoms.

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting needles into the body at certain points for therapeutic purposes. It is one of the most common types of traditional Chinese medicine.

Additional benefits of acupuncture include easing pain, reducing nausea, boosting immunity, and more.

According to a study, acupuncture and acupressure are just as effective as anti-nausea medications at alleviating symptoms, with few negative effects.

4. Smell a Lemon

Citrusy smells, like from a cut lemon, can help with pregnancy-related nausea.

Keep a lemon in your fridge or cut it up and place it somewhere you can easily smell it to improve nausea symptoms.

Or, simply keep a small bottle of lemon essential oils with you.

5. Eat Smaller Meals More Frequently

Avoid eating large meals because feeling full may worsen nausea.

Instead, eat smaller meals that are spaced out every few hours.

6. Deep Breathing

Deep breathing exercises can help you feel more at ease when morning sickness is wreaking havoc on your stomach. Focus on taking deep, slow breaths.

Breathing in through your nose and out for your mouth a few times may help.

This will get oxygen to flow through your body, easing nausea symptoms. Here are some deep breathing exercises you can try:

Practice breathing in through the nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, and exhale through the mouth for 4 seconds.

7. Herbal Tea

Herbal tea can be helpful when you’re dealing with pregnancy-related nausea.

Ginger, peppermint, and chamomile are herbal teas that may help reduce unpleasant symptoms.

There’s also something soothing about a warm cup of tea.

8. Get Plenty of Rest

Let’s face it. When you’re exhausted everything seems more challenging.

If you need an excuse to take a nap, morning sickness is just the thing. It’s not only ok to take it easy on yourself, but also encouraged!

So don’t forget to set aside time for rest, even if it’s just a short power nap.
